Giants, and a Whole lotta of Weird
Giants, Dinosaurs, and a Whole Lotta Weird: Our Route 66 (and Beyond) Roadside Adventure
This blog is all about the giants — the statues, sculptures, and wild roadside monuments w e spotted on Route 66 and beyond. And let me tell you, we saw it all. If it was big, strange, or animal-shaped, we probably pulled over and took a picture with it.
We saw dinosaurs. So. Many. Dinosaurs.
We saw buffaloes, bowls, birds in giant nests, pink elephants, and a blue hippo, the college students used to move him around the university. The city made him a forever home, he is bolted down so tight no one can move him.
There were lizards, rabbits, and even Bigfoot (yes, really).
We walked inside a giant blue whale, saw a massive gas pump,
and even spotted a giant leg lamp
straight out of A Christmas Story.
There were coal miners, pirates, cowboys, and mysterious men with axes.
We saw huge ice cream cones, a firefighter’s hat, a ketchup bottle, a milk bottle, and of course, the famous giant fork and bowling pin.
Some of the highlights:
- "Touch the Clouds" — a powerful bronze statue of a Native American chief at Central Oklahoma University.
- "Dignity" — a stunning, modern sculpture of a Native woman holding a blanket made of shimmering blue and silver panels, standing tall over the Missouri River.
- A Barbie display (yes, they are fabulous). LOL
- Taz (we still don’t know why, but we loved it).
We eventually came up with a theory:
If it’s broken or weird and you don’t need it anymore... put it on the side of the road.
And honestly? That’s what makes this kind of road trip so great. You never know what you’ll find just around the corner: something ridiculous, something beautiful, or something that makes you laugh so hard you have to pull over.
