Grand Falls… or Not!
We set out excited to see Grand Falls, Arizona—also known as Chocolate Falls.(Doesn’t it look Beautiful, photo from google.) But as we got closer, we hit a big roadblock. Literally. The road was closed with a big sign, and we couldn’t drive the main route to get there.
So, we thought we were clever—we pulled out the map and said, “Let’s just go around it and catch the view from another direction.” Well, that turned into a nine-mile adventure over bumpy dirt and rock roads. We were cruising along Indian Route 70 (not to be confused with our smooth-ish I-70 back in Columbus, Ohio), dodging deep water patches and bouncing over what felt like the moon's surface. At one point, someone had even made a completely new route around a water patch—because there was no way to tell how deep it was. Probably would’ve been fun on an ATV… but not in Janet’s car. LOL.
Finally, we made it! Grand Falls—except, not so grand this time. Totally dried up.
That’s probably why the road was closed to begin with! Still, the landscape was stunning in its own quiet way. Even without the rushing water, the area had this kind of raw desert beauty that made the whole detour feel worth it. Almost.
We tried. We really did.
